Pregnancy & Pre-birth treatment

Pregnancy can be a vulnerable time, especially in the first trimester. This is more likely to be the case if there is a history of infertility, miscarriage or gynaecological disorder.

In the first trimester, acupuncture can alleviate nausea, vomiting, and exhaustion. It can also be used successfully to treat early pregnancy spotting or bleeding, and to prevent miscarriage.

Chinese herbs are especially useful in early pregnancy where there has been previous miscarriage.

Throughout pregnancy the following conditions respond well to acupuncture:

  • anxiety and depression
  • back pain
  • heartburn
  • varicose veins
  • anaemia
  • sinusitis
  • insomnia
  • carpal tunnel syndrome
  • pelvic pain
  • high blood pressure
  • haemorrhoids

From 37 weeks, weekly acupuncture treatments help prepare the body for labour. The intent is to smooth the flow of Qi in the pelvis, therefore facilitating an easier labour and birth.

Acupuncture can turn breech presentations head down, as well as correct posterior presentations. There are well established techniques for induction of labour for post-term pregnancies.
